Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
