The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a armed takeover in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's decision was the potential of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
