The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
