Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
